Surgery Saved My Life

Iris

Our vet partner, Suncoast Veterinary Emergency and Our vet partner, Suncoast Veterinary Emergency and Speciality Center, reached out to us for help with a patient suffereing from pyometra. Iris, a 6 year old pittie, was saved due to the immediate surgery she was able to receive.

Pyometras are deadly and almost 100% preventable with a simple spay. They also cost hundreds to thousands of dollars more to treat than a planned surgery. Pets can still die despite aggressive treatment once diagnosed.

Amazingly the vast majority of pet owners had no idea this was a very real risk...they had pets they did not intend to breed and were not intermingled with other pets so they didn't think spaying was necessary. 80% of pyometra cases are seniors and many of them pittie mixes like Iris.

Funding for this was made possible through our Medical Assistance Program for emergency, trauma and surgical cases from the grant from the Community Foundation of Sarasota County through their Animal Welfare Grant Program thanks to the Martha Leiter and Nancy Streetman Fund I and Robert Parker Fund.
